(973) 9 Doulas
Our Doulas and Perinatal Health Advocates work to reduce the risk of undesirable pregnancy and birth outcomes, promote perinatal wellness for parents and children, and promote breastfeeding advocacy to all families, while also working to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in infant and maternal health within undervalued and underrepresented communities.
SciHonor Devotion is a Labor Doula, Postpartum Doula, Childbirth Educator, Homebirth Midwife Assistant and Women’s Reproductive Health Advocate who serves women and girls in her community through workshop, ceremony and rites of passage.
SciHonor Devotion has been in the field of Women’s Reproductive Health since 1999 when she became pregnant with her first child. She began her journey training and certifying as a Labor Doula with Doulas of North America (DONA) in 2001. She also trained with the Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association (CAPPA) and became a certified childbirth educator and Postpartum Doula in 2004. She continued to take trainings and gain certifications through BirthMama, Mamatoto Village, Inc., Indigenous Remedies, Hearthside Perinatal Bereavement Services, Divine Birth Wisdom and more.
SciHonor has worked and volunteered in a variety of environments including women’s shelters and birthing centers, teaching pregnant women about the reproductive process, labor, birth, postpartum, breastfeeding and positive parenting skills.
She was a member of the New York City Chapter of the International Center for Traditional Childbearing (ICTC) which was called Sistahs for Better Birth and held the position of secretary.
SciHonor is a trained and certified Homebirth Midwife Assistant and has worked with Memaniye Cinque, CNM, closely with homebirth midwife Sakina O’Uhuru and others, supporting home birthing families.
She has also done workshops for the annual Harlem Birth Action Committee’s community affair with Nonkululeko Tyehemba as well as many other community events.
SciHonor remains current in knowledge and experience by continuing to take courses in Midwifery Skills, Perinatal Bereavements, Womb Trauma, Newborn Assessment, Breastfeeding Developments, Hormonal Wellness, Fertility, Perinatal Psychology, Herbalism, Homeopathy and Aromatherapy for the Childbearing Year, Neonatal Resuscitation, Implicit Bias, the Disparities in Birth Outcomes and more.
SciHonor added another level of skill to her services by becoming a certified “Womb Sauna” Practitioner in 2014 and opened “The Womb Room”, to be able to better serve women with the ancient art of using herbs, essential oils and more to heal themselves from and prevent reproductive ailments such as infertility, fibroids and to just maintain vaginal and reproductive health. In keeping with that passion, SciHonor began to distribute alternative feminine hygiene products, in order to give women healthier alternatives to conventional products that can contribute to some of the womb ailments that women often experience.
SciHonor is currently in the advanced midwifery program at WomanCraft Midwifery in Amherst, Massachusetts taught by Beth Anne Moonstone. Through this course, she is currently researching How Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders are Recognized, Identified and Managed in Communities of Color and how they are supported both medically and socially.
In keeping in line with enhancing a woman’s beauty and health, she continues with the Earth’s Natural Touch product line of products to help women prevent and manage womb issues, aid with postpartum recovery and breastfeeding and more.
SciHonor is also very passionate about nutrition during the perinatal years and has taken her experience of being vegan for over 14 years and has used it to guide women with their own nutritious, dietary choices and path. Through Queen’s Quisine, she is able to teach men, women, children and teens the importance of overall nutrition, vegan cooking options and kitchen skills.
She is a published writer and has written for magazines, blogs, the 2 volume set - The Hood Health Handbook and The Source Magazine’s online column, Hood Health 101.
SciHonor also works to enhance the lives of women and girls of all ages through Sacred Ceremonies, Gatherings, Workshops, Rites of Passage Programs, Retreats and events.
SciHonor created the Earth’s Natural Touch: Birth Care & Beyond – New Doulas Skills: Beyond the Basics Program to ensure that there were competent Community Doulas and Perinatal Health Advocates supporting all families. Her team of Doulas “The Dada” is well equipped to support families through their birthing journeys.
